WHY AND HOW GOD CREATED THINGS--$16.95 (Ages 12 and up; 74 pages) A preface to the study of Chemistry introduces the students to the two basic elements of creation that God uses. This is presented in a report by W. Cleon Skousen called "Building Blocks of the Universe." With this background, students study the properties and physics of all matter. At the conclusion of their study of the ten main categories, students are asked to answer the question: WHY did God create things? Students DEFINE, EXPLAIN, and ILLUSTRATE the major vocabulary words in each of the ten divisions of Chemistry. They then use religious writings or their scriptures of choice to study the spiritual use and symbolism of the basic elements in God's kingdom. The ten divisions and the major vocabulary words in this guidebook are: Properties of Matter Elements Mass Odor Color Example of a Learning Exercise: "Find the basic 30 elements in a dictionary or encyclopedia and write each scientific symbol in the blank, on the pages provided. Memorize the symbols along with the 30 elements." Example of a Learning Exercise from the scriptures: "Read 2 Peter 3:10-14. Describe in your own words what you think this scripture means and how the elements could "melt with fervent heat." Illustrate this scripture." The Physics of Matter Molecule Kinetic Inertia Potential Gravity Example of a Learning Exercise: "Compare the molecules of a metallic substance to those of an organic substance. Draw the differences and write a description of each." Example of a Learning Exercise from the scriptures: "Explain how y9ou think it was possible for Christ to 'walk on water' and what the water molecules would have had to do in order to support His weight. Write your opinion as to what part faith has in this ability, in relation to Peter's experience. (See Matthew 14:22-33.) Draw a picture of this scripture if you wish." Classes of Matter Solid Liquid Gas Example of a Learning Exercise: "Draw and color a volcano. Indicate where the three classes of matter are evident - solid, liquid, vapor." Example of a Learning Exercise from the scriptures: "In your own words, describe chemically how God could have separated the 'waters from the waters' during the creation of the earth and created oxygen. (See the book of Genesis, also Abraham and Moses in the Pearl of Great Price.) The State of Solids Organic Metallic Example of a Learning Exercise: "Crystalline solids differ from any other because their molecules are formed into beautiful geometrical shapes. There are six crystal systems. Draw each of the crystalline shapes on the following page, and name a substance that has these particular crystalline molecules." Example of a Learning Exercise from the scriptures: "Read Matthew 3:9, Matthew 4:3, and Luke 19:28-40. Then write your opinion answering these questions: Could matter really change their inorganic molecular structure (stones) to form organic element (living tissue)? If so, how do you think this could be accomplished chemically?" The State of Liquids Temperature Volume Evaporation Example of a Learning Exercise: "Research the difference between Centigrade and Fahrenheit in relationship to temperatures. Write and illustrate your findings by drawing two thermometers on the page provided, one Centigrade, and the other Fahrenheit." Example of a Learning Exercise from the scriptures: "Read John 2:1-11. Explain chemically how the water was changed into the purest wine by Jesus - His first miracle." The State of Gases Density Pressure Distillation Condensation Example of a Learning Exercise: "Do an experiment with condensation by filling a jar half full of very warm water. Cover the jar with a tight lid. Observe what happens to the air above the water. Write your findings and illustrate the condensation process." Example of a Learning Exercise from the scriptures: "The scriptures refer to 'vapour' in several places. Look up James 4:14 and write your feelings about this verse, or chapter. Answer this question: What is James trying to tell the people?" Combinations of Matter Solvent Solution Concentrate Compound Mixture Example of a Learning Exercise: "Explain how food "dissolves" inside the human body and then combines with other elements to give you nourishment. Illustrate this process." Example of a Learning Exercise from the scriptures: "Write a paragraph explaining your opinion about this question: When God created the great waters, why did He mix the waters with NaCl?" Chemistry in the Atmosphere Troposphere Stratosphere Ionosphere Example of a Learning Exercise: "Molecules of vapor travel through the atmosphere almost as fast as sound. Research and explain the reaction of atoms and molecules in the atmosphere when a 'sonic boom' occurs. Illustrate what happens." Example of a Learning Exercise from the scriptures: "Read Matthew 16:2-3. Explain chemically why this weather prediction is so often a true one." The Study of Light Solar Light Waves Example of a Learning Exercise: "In your dictionary look up the word 'light' and write its several definitions (remember that we are not referring to 'light' meaning 'not heavy!')" Example of a Learning Exercise from the scriptures: "Read Matthew 5:16 and explain in a report how you can personally respond to the light spoken of in this scripture. Make a list of goals that will help you keep this admonition." The Study of Energy Magnetism Power Example of a Learning Exercise: "Explain how a Geiger counter works. Write the history of how it became known by that name." Example of a Learning Exercise from the scriptures: "The Priesthood of God has His power to do many things. Look up the word "power" in the scriptures and make a list of all the things the scriptures say the power of God can do. Write in your journal experiences you have had, or heard about, where the power of the Priesthood healed. In your own words, explain how this process can happen."
